Robotics never leave the LRM to access cartidges in the MEM, insuring the
fastest access times and the highest reliability.

POWERFUL COMPASS ARCHITECTURE
Qualstar’s Compass Architecture™ (patent pending) is our
unique robotic design. Compass Architecture delivers a
library system where one highly reliable robot travels an
average of just 21 inches horizontally to access over 2,800
tapes. Robotics located in each LRM simply reach into
adjacent MEMs to access cartridges located there. The
robotics always remain within the LRM cabinet, eliminating
the power consumption, reliability problems and delays that
can occur with robots that have to traverse at high speed
between cabinets to access remote cartridges.
XLS HIGHLY MODULAR DESIGN
Start with 350 slots and grow in easy increments to over
6,000 slots as your storage requirements grow. Storage
slots and tape drives are readily added while maintaining
data access and controlling cost.
THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF XLS
XLS combines two distinct modules to deliver very dense,
cost-effective and flexible library systems. The Library
Resource Module, LRM, is a complete, self-contained,
stand-alone library and forms the base unit for the system.
The Memory Expansion Modules, MEMs1, house 535 or
1,075 additional storage slots in economical and very
compact footprint.
LRM – THE LIBRARY RESOURCE MODULE
Two distinct LRM models house up to 20 drives and 465
slots, or up to 32 drives and 655 slots. Each LRM is highly
scalable, making it easy to vary drive and slot ratios to
optimize resources. Support for up to eight logical library
partitions is built into each XLS, giving administrators
the flexibility needed to economically support multiple
applications in a single Simply Reliable library.
MEM – THE MEMORY EXPANSION MODULE
When additional storage is required, one or two MEMs
can be easily added to each LRM. Each MEM contains 535 or
1,075 additional slots in less than nine square feet utilizing
Qualstar’s trademark rotating carousel design. If more data
transfer capability is required, adding LRMs expands the
number of drives up to 96. Or, two MEMs can be added to
one LRM to deliver a configuration that packs over 1
petabyte (native) in less than 26 square feet of valuable IT
floor space. Capacity expansion is both quick and cost
effective. LRMs and MEMs lock together forming one unit.
