Tape Libraries vs. Tape Autoloaders
Autoloaders are limited in both capacity and throughput. Autoloaders hold one tape drive and a limited number of cartridges, typically 8 to 16. They are primarily intended to support small department or single application backups. These products are usually designed for low cost, and are not intended for high duty cycle operations.
Tape libraries invariably house two or more drives and from 20 to over tens of thousands of tapes. Libraries are designed for continuous, unattended operation and support simultaneous reading and writing to multiple drives. Libraries also offer key features such as barcode readers to scan labels on cartridges, and I/O ports for importing and exporting tapes under application control.

Qualstar designs and manufactures over twenty tape libraries based on the Ultrium LTO tape format. These libraries house 2 to 128 drives and over 11,780 cartridges, providing combinations of capacity and data throughput to match any data protection and archive requirement.
